On the coast road is the lively market town of Ballycastle.

The town sits at the mouth of the two northernmost Antrim glens , Glenshesk and Glentaisie.

There is a beautiful marina and some great local pubs. There are also some nice shops.

Ballycastle is where the ferry to Rathlin island leaves from…..weather permitting ! There are also some “water taxis” available.

In June Ballycastle holds the Ould Lammas Fair , which is Irelands oldest fair , dating from 1606.

The stallholders do a roaring trade in Dulse (a tasty edible seaweed) and Yellowman (a bright coloured hard toffee).

There is a memorial to Guglielmo Marconi to commemorate the inventor of the wireless. He made his first transmission between Ballycastle and Rathlin in 1898.

Nearby , in the middle of a very good golf course , is Bonamargy Friary , founded around 1500…..the whole thing is very interesting , and a real hidden gem.

Try our extended Belfast tours and visit Ballycastle. Or on any of our tours of Ireland build in a trip along the Causeway coast.

Donaghadee is a small market town whose origins lie in its proximity to the Scottish coast. In fact on a clear day its easy to see Galloway across the water if you climb up the little hill to the MOAT.

The MOAT is the remains of a nineteenth century folly.

From the seventeenth century until the middle of the nineteenth century ferries ran between Donaghadee and Portpatrick. Various notables arrived in in Ireland by this route , including , in 1818 , John Keats on his walking tour of the British Isles.

The liitle pub GRACE NEILLS INN on the High Street dates back to 1611 and claims to have accomodated Peter the Great of Russia during his European tour.

Yes….Donaghadee is a little hidden gem on Ireland tours. There is a nice little golf course too.

It is also easily accessible from Cruise ships or on our extended Belfast tours.

Comments: I have just returned from a two week golf trip with three girlfriends. Maurice and our other driver Austen made this first trip memorable and unforgetable. They were both so knowlegable, accomadating, and eager to please and were the epitomy of Irish hospitality.Everything was first class from start to finish and it was so relaxing not having to worry about driving, organizing tours or making dinner reservations. I can’t imagine my next trip to Ireland without them!!
